Locksmith service in Wake County
Mailbox locks and lost mailbox keys in Raleigh
Who changes the lock depends on who owns the mailbox. For a Post Office-owned cluster box, the Post Office installs a new lock at your expense. For a box owned by an HOA or a complex, the owner handles lock and key service. A locksmith can change the lock on a mailbox you own, or one the owner tells them to. Fixr lists mailbox lock replacement at $75 to $200.

Who owns your mailbox?
Most newer Wake County subdivisions and apartment complexes use cluster box units: one pedestal of locked compartments for the whole street or building. The Postal Operations Manual draws the line clearly. For postal-owned units, "The Postal Service is responsible for providing every customer a compartment lock and three keys." It keeps no duplicates, and "if they lose all the keys, the Postal Service will have to install a new lock at the customer's expense." For privately owned units, "The builder or property owner is responsible for providing lock and key service."
| Mailbox | Who to call first |
|---|---|
| Cluster box owned by the Postal Service | Your local Post Office |
| Cluster box owned by an HOA or complex | The HOA or leasing office; they may send a locksmith |
| A locking mailbox on your own house or post | A locksmith, or replace the lock yourself |
Not sure which you have? Ask the Post Office that delivers to you or your HOA. Don't let anyone drill a compartment on a box you don't control.

Just moved in?
The Postal Service asks people to return mailbox keys when they move and says the Post Office should change the lock before giving the compartment to a new customer, at no charge for the first lock and keys. In practice, keys get missed. If you got one key, or none, ask. With 31% of Wake County households in the ZIP codes we cover having moved in since 2020 (Census ACS), plenty of mailbox keys have changed hands.
Mail theft rumors
A Raleigh thread passed along a mail carrier's warning that thieves had a copy of the master key for community mailboxes in one neighborhood. We can't confirm that one. A licensed locksmith replying in the thread pointed out that postal keys are controlled and can't simply be copied at a key counter. The master lock on a cluster box belongs to the Postal Service, so a locksmith can't fix it; report suspected mail theft to the Postal Inspection Service and your Post Office.
Questions people in Raleigh ask
Can a locksmith open my cluster mailbox?
Only with the owner's say-so. On a postal-owned box, the Post Office handles the customer lock. On an HOA or complex box, the owner decides who services it.
My package is stuck in a locked parcel locker. What now?
Parcel lockers on cluster boxes are opened by the carrier, who leaves you a key in your compartment. If the key is missing or the locker is jammed, call the Post Office that delivers to you.
