Raleigh by the numbers
Why Raleigh keeps locksmiths busy

36%

How it works
One request, one licensed local locksmith
- Tell us what you need. Call or text, or use the form. Say where you are and what kind of lock or car it is.
- A local locksmith calls you back. They give you their business name, their North Carolina license number and the total price, trip fee included.
- You decide before work starts. If the price on site is different from the phone price, you can say no.

Know the number first
What locksmith work usually costs
These are published national price ranges. They are not quotes, and not a Raleigh average. The locksmith gives you the total before any work starts.
A real lockout price includes the trip. If you hear a number like $15 to $35 "to come out," ask what the total will be. Why that matters.

The part most sites skip
North Carolina licenses locksmiths. Check before anyone drives out.
Under the state's Locksmith Licensing Act, working as a locksmith without a license from the North Carolina Locksmith Licensing Board is a crime. The board's site lets anyone look up a locksmith by name, free. That gives you something people in most states don't have: a two-minute check that filters out the bait-and-switch outfits.
Raleigh has seen the scam up close. In 2010, WRAL filmed a Raleigh-area homeowner quoted $35 to get back in whose bill went past $400 after her locks were drilled, and Raleigh police arrested two unlicensed locksmiths that summer.
- Ask for the business's legal name and its North Carolina license number.
- Look the name up on the board's Verify License page.
- Get the total price on the phone, not only the trip fee.
- Expect to show ID. Licensed locksmiths carry a board photo ID card, so you can ask to see theirs.
- Get an itemized, written invoice with the business name on it.

Questions people in Raleigh ask
How much does a locksmith cost in Raleigh?
Fixr puts the average locksmith job at about $150, with most between $100 and $200 (January 2025). Published national ranges put a house lockout at $50 to $175, a car lockout at $80 to $150 and a rekey at $70 to $160 (Fixr). Prices in Raleigh vary by company, time of day and the lock, so ask for the total, trip fee included, before anyone starts.
What to do if you can't afford a locksmith?
First make sure it isn't an emergency: a child or a pet locked in a car or home is a 911 call. Then try the free options. Check every door and window, call whoever has a spare, ask your landlord or leasing office, and check whether your car insurance, a roadside club, your credit card or the car's warranty covers lockouts. If none of that works, ask a locksmith for the total on the phone and whether they take a card, and wait until business hours if you safely can. Nights and weekends cost more.
Do locksmiths charge a call-out fee?
Usually, yes. Fixr lists a trip fee of $25 to $100 and a service call of $100 to $200; Thumbtack lists $30 to $150 just to come out, higher at night and on holidays. A fair quote folds that into one total. The FTC and the BBB both advise asking about service-call and mileage fees before you agree.
How long does it usually take for a locksmith to come?
It depends on where you are, the time of day, traffic on the Beltline and how busy the locksmith is. There is no standard, so ask for an arrival estimate when you call and get the price at the same time. A lockout itself usually takes minutes once they are there; a car key that needs cutting and programming takes longer.
Do locksmiths need a license in North Carolina?
Yes. Under North Carolina's Locksmith Licensing Act (G.S. 74F-3), no one may perform or offer to perform locksmith services in the state without a license from the North Carolina Locksmith Licensing Board. A first offense is a Class 1 misdemeanor. You can check a name on the board's Verify License page before anyone drives out.
