Locksmith service in Wake County

Commercial locksmith work in Raleigh

For a business, the usual jobs are rekeying after someone leaves with a key, a master key system so each person opens only what they need, and storefront or exit hardware that wears out on a busy door. Get a written quote per door or per cylinder, and ask for the locksmith's North Carolina license number.

Common business jobs

  • Rekeying after turnover. When an employee or tenant leaves without returning keys, rekeying the affected locks is the quick fix.
  • Master key systems. One key for the owner, others for each area. Restricted keyways make it harder to copy keys at a hardware store.
  • Storefront and aluminum doors. These use different locks and cylinders than houses. Mention the door type when you call.
  • Exit devices and closers. Push bars and door closers wear out on busy doors.
  • Access control. Keypads and card readers, which let you remove one person's access without touching anyone else's.
  • Mailbox and file cabinet locks. Fixr lists mailbox lock replacement at $75 to $200.

What a small office actually asks

A Raleigh office manager posted looking for a commercial locksmith to change some locks and upgrade others, and wanted a recommendation rather than a search result. That is the right instinct, and one of the replies added the best advice in the thread: check the license with the state board first. For a business, the questions are less about price and more about control: who has keys, who can order more, and who keeps the records.

What to ask

  • A written quote per door or per cylinder, and whether after-hours work costs more.
  • Who keeps the key records for a master system, and how new keys are authorized.
  • Whether the work affects fire exits. Exit hardware is covered by the fire code, so a locksmith should not install anything that blocks a required exit.
  • The business's North Carolina locksmith license number. Building owners and their own maintenance staff are exempt when working on their own property; an outside locksmith is not.

Questions people in Raleigh ask

Can you work after hours so we don't close?

Many locksmiths can, at an after-hours rate. Ask for the rate when you book.

How do we stop employees copying keys?

Ask about a restricted or patented keyway, where blanks are only sold to the locksmith who registered the system.

Our landlord owns the building. Can we change the locks?

Check the lease first. Many commercial leases require the landlord's consent and a key for the landlord.
