Free options to check first

  • Child or pet inside: call 911. RDU averages 64 days a year at 90°F or hotter, and the National Weather Service says a closed car can go from safe to 94.3°F in just over 2 minutes. More on hot-car lockouts.
  • Roadside assistance. Many auto insurance policies include lockout service. So do roadside clubs, many credit cards and some new-car warranties. Check the app or the card in your wallet.
  • The car's app. Many newer cars can open their doors remotely through the manufacturer's app if you set it up.
  • A spare key at home, with a family member, or with a coworker who can drive it over.

What not to do: work a coat hanger into the door. Raleigh forum posts asking whether anyone nearby can open a car with one turn up regularly. Modern doors have wiring and side airbags inside, and a repair costs more than the lockout.

Opening a car is a quick job. Making a new key is not, so if the keys are lost rather than locked inside, the price is a key replacement, not a lockout. Car key replacement.

Who else opens cars

North Carolina's license law exempts businesses that open vehicles as part of their ordinary work (tow services, repair shops, repossessors, dealers, motor clubs), as long as they don't present themselves as locksmiths (G.S. 74F-16). So your roadside club's tow truck can open the car without a locksmith license. Anyone who advertises as a locksmith needs one.

What to have ready

  • The exact model and color, and where the car is parked. In a parking deck, give the level and the nearest stairwell.
  • Your ID and the registration. If the registration is in the glovebox, the locksmith can check it once the door is open.
  • Whether the keys are inside or lost. That changes the job and the price.

Questions people in Raleigh ask

Will opening the car damage it?

A trained locksmith uses tools made for car doors and should not damage the door or the lock. Ask how they will open it.

Will the police open my car?

Don't count on it. Police and fire crews treat a child or pet locked inside as an emergency and will respond to 911. For a plain lockout, one Raleigh poster on Reddit said officers would only help if the car was running. Plan on a locksmith or roadside service.

My keys are lost, not locked inside. Is that a lockout?

No. Without a key to drive away with, you need a replacement key cut and, on most cars since the late 1990s, programmed. That costs more than opening the door.
