Fixr's broader range for a locksmith car key replacement is $70 to $250, and $50 to $200 for programming a key or fob. AAA quotes about $200 for a transponder key and $200 to $500 for a smart key, and says some smart keys have to come from the dealer.

What the locksmith needs

  • The exact year and model, and whether it is push-to-start. Read it off the registration; locksmiths price by the exact car, and a wrong model year changes the quote.
  • The VIN, from the windshield or registration.
  • Proof you own it: registration or title, and a photo ID. A careful locksmith won't cut a key without it.
  • Any working key, if you have one. Copying a key is cheaper than making one from scratch.

Lost the only key?

That is the expensive case, because the key has to be made from the car's key code and the car has to learn the new chip. It is also the case where a mobile locksmith saves the most, since the alternative is towing to a dealer. A Raleigh driver who asked on Reddit about towing a friend's car to a locksmith had it backwards: the locksmith comes to the car.

Lost it on a run? Raleigh's greenways and parks turn up a steady stream of found-fob posts on local forums, from Umstead to Lake Johnson to Dix Park. Check those, and call the park office, before you pay for a new key. Then clip the next one to your waistband.

Once you have a key, get a spare made the same day. A second key costs a fraction of starting over, and returning a leased car with one key instead of two can cost you at turn-in.

Stolen, not lost

The Raleigh Police Department's area recorded 2,357 vehicle thefts in 2024 and 1,575 in 2025 (FBI Crime Data Explorer). If your key was stolen, ask the locksmith to erase the old key from the car's memory when they program the new one, so the missing key no longer starts it. If your house key was on the same ring with anything showing your address, rekey the house too. Car theft in Raleigh.

Questions people in Raleigh ask

Can a locksmith program a key fob?

For most makes, yes, at the car. Some newer or luxury models can only be programmed by the dealer. Give the exact year and model when you call and ask.

Can the old key be disabled?

On most cars with transponder keys, yes. When the new key is programmed, the locksmith can remove lost keys from the car's memory so they no longer start the engine.

How long does it take?

Cutting and programming usually takes well under an hour once the locksmith is at the car, if they carry the right blank. Uncommon keys may need to be ordered.
